Mushrooming Gear: Knives, Backpacks and Lanterns

Checked

Buy the Canvas Sack at level 2 for $250 before any knife, then the Pocket Knife at level 3 for $300 — that order keeps every later trip profitable.

The knife ladder: which rarity each knife unlocks

Every knife in Mushrooming carries three numerical stats alongside a rarity ceiling. Power determines how many clicks it takes to harvest a mushroom; higher power cuts in fewer clicks. Precision widens the gold Pristine zone on the timing gauge, while steadiness slows the marker sweep across the meter.

The hard gate on every blade is its harvest limit. If a mushroom belongs to a rarity above your blade rating, the harvest prompt stays locked and you cannot cut it. Upgrading your blade through the shop ladder is the only way to pick higher-rarity species across Whisperwood.

Pumpkin Carver (2,000 Candy) and Ember Moon Sickle (12,000 Candy) are event items traded for Candy during the Lantern Wake. They do not have a permanent coin price in the tool shop. Elder Thorn lists a placeholder price of $999,999,999 in game data and cannot be purchased through standard merchant stalls.

Backpacks: how many mushrooms you can carry

Backpack capacity sets how many mushrooms you can hold before walking back to town or visiting a merchant. Selling requires an NPC vendor unless you own the Sell Anywhere perk, so bag size directly determines how much time you spend gathering versus running back and forth, setting your coins per hour.

Backpack Level Price Holds
Wicker Basket 1 Free (Starter) 12
Canvas Sack 2 $250 25
Leather Satchel 5 $1,500 40
Hearth Pack 7 $2,500 50
Explorer's Pack 9 $6,000 60
Tinker's Pack 12 $9,000 72
Forager's Frame Pack 14 $20,000 85
Mycologist's Pack 20 $42,000 120
Resin Tapper's Pack 24 $55,000 150
Enchanted Spore Pack 28 $125,000 180
Barrow Satchel 47 $250,000 210
Wayfarer's Frame 57 $450,000 240
Founders' Pack 67 $700,000 280

The jump from the starter Wicker Basket to the Canvas Sack costs $250 at level 2 and more than doubles your capacity from 12 to 25 mushrooms. That single purchase halves your return trips right away. Upgrading bag capacity ahead of knife upgrades keeps foraging runs efficient as you expand into deeper territories.

Lanterns: seeing at night and getting into The Undergrove

Whisperwood cycles between 11 minutes of daylight and 5 minutes of night. Lanterns cast a circle of light around your character so you can spot mushrooms in the dark, and their sense stat extends the distance at which mushrooms highlight through foliage and fog.

Carrying any lantern satisfies the entry requirement for the gate into /map. Without a lantern equipped or in your bag, the cave entrance blocks your way.

Lantern Level Price Sense Light
Tin Lantern 2 $200 22 18
Brass Lantern 5 $1,200 30 22
Firefly Jar 9 $5,000 38 26
Jack Lantern 10 Candy only (3,500 Candy) 52 31
Crystal Lantern 14 $18,000 48 30
Moonstone Lantern 20 $39,000 60 34
Spirit Lantern 28 $130,000 75 40
Hushlight 45 Candy only (35,000 Candy) 80 42
Stillwater Lantern 48 $300,000 85 44
Gloam Lantern 62 $600,000 95 48
Mothlight Lantern 64 $800,000 98 49
Deepglass Lantern 72 $1,400,000 104 52

Any lantern gets you into The Undergrove; the better ones sense mushrooms from further away. Across the equipment vendors, four pieces (Pumpkin Carver, Ember Moon Sickle, Jack Lantern, and Hushlight at 2,000 / 12,000 / 3,500 / 35,000 Candy) are seasonal event items exchanged during the Lantern Wake with no permanent coin price. The deep lanterns in Gloamwood and The Rootways illuminate hidden signs and paths that stay dark under plain tin light.

What to buy next at your level

Balancing coin investments between blades, packs, and lanterns prevents hitting progression walls. Buying a high-tier blade without the pack space to carry your finds forces constant backtracking, while neglecting blade upgrades leaves valuable rare spawns untouched.
