Unlock order and what each gate costs
Whisperwood divides its foraging grounds into nine harvesting areas and two villages. You start in Birch Meadow with immediate access to Common and Uncommon mushrooms. Expanding into new ground requires passing specific gates: coin tolls, equipment checks, level milestones, or collection totals.
The most critical early gate is the Toll Bridge. Paying the Bridge Keeper $1,500 is a one-time toll that unlocks three wilderness zones at once: Amber Glade, Mossy Hollow, and Pinewood Ridge. Paying once clears all three paths permanently, tripling your accessible terrain without recurring costs.
The table below outlines all nine harvesting zones in unlock progression. The kind counts are the game's own per-area numbers; the mushroom list counts a kind under every area it can appear in, so its filter totals run higher.
| Area | How you get in | Mushroom kinds |
|---|---|---|
| Birch Meadow | Open from the start | 23 kinds |
| Amber Glade | Across the Toll Bridge ($1,500) | 23 kinds |
| Mossy Hollow | Across the Toll Bridge ($1,500) | 20 kinds |
| Pinewood Ridge | Across the Toll Bridge ($1,500) | 20 kinds |
| Azure Peak | Reach level 20 | 5 kinds |
| The Undergrove | Bring any lantern | 7 kinds |
| Elderdeep | Find 35 kinds of mushroom | 20 kinds |
| Gloamwood | Reach level 45, enter via Mourners' Cut | 44 kinds |
| The Rootways | Reach level 60, climb down the well in Fernhollow | 34 kinds |
Subterranean areas like The Undergrove do not impose player level limits. Carrying any working lantern, even the $200 Tin Lantern, satisfies the entry check and lets you enter the cave. Elderdeep also skips level requirements; it opens as soon as you find and catalog 35 unique mushroom species in your field log. To track level milestones for Gloamwood and The Rootways, reference the full XP progression on /leveling.
What grows in each area
Each region supports a specific lineup of native mushrooms, allowing targeted foraging for upgrades and profit:

- Amber Glade (23 kinds): Batwing Oyster ($40 Uncommon), Cauldron Cap ($105 Rare), Caesar's Mushroom ($1,450 Legendary), and night-only Foxfire ($90 Rare).

You can filter and search habitat requirements for all 189 species on /mushrooms.
Where the shops and quest givers stand
Whisperwood features two settled towns alongside wilderness posts where key NPCs reside:
Fernhollow Village is your central home base next to spawn. The four core service vendors stand around the central square: the Merchant buys mushrooms, the Toolsmith sells knives, the Packsmith sells larger sacks, and the Lamplighter sells lanterns. Pip Mossley stands near spawn to offer the 19-part village quest chain. The Old Well sits in the square, operating the bucket down to The Rootways once you reach level 60.
Emberwick is the secondary settlement located inside Amber Glade across the Toll Bridge. It houses the Smith for metal blades, the Herbalist for regional lore, and the Trader for exchanges.
Along wilderness trails, specific residents provide support. The Old Forager and Hunter stand in Birch Meadow with opening tasks. The Bridge Keeper monitors the crossing to the Toll Bridge, and the Pumpkin Farmer manages crops nearby. The Amberwright and Mountain Warden watch paths on Pinewood Ridge. In Gloamwood, you find the Waystation, the Weigher, and the Gravekeeper, who runs the level 40+ quest line near the Quiet Acre. Deep underground, Odo stands in The Rootways and hands out the underground quests.
Which areas are worth unlocking first
Progressing through Whisperwood smoothly requires prioritizing unlocks that expand earnings rather than stockpiling coins:
- Pay the $1,500 Toll Bridge early. Paying this single fee opens Amber Glade, Mossy Hollow, and Pinewood Ridge simultaneously. Access to 63 additional species allows you to fill your sack with Rare and Epic finds that outpay meadow mushrooms immediately.
- Buy any lantern to enter The Undergrove. You do not need a high-tier light to enter. Purchasing the $200 Tin Lantern grants instant access to seven cave species, including high-paying crystal varieties.
- Rush 35 species to unlock Elderdeep. Do not wait for late-game levels to reach Elderdeep. Gathering distinct Common and Uncommon specimens across Birch Meadow, Amber Glade, and Mossy Hollow lets you hit the 35-kind requirement early. Elderdeep provides access to Bleeding Tooth ($360) and Starspore ($10,500) without character level restrictions.
- Prepare gear before Gloamwood and The Rootways. Gloamwood (level 45) and The Rootways (level 60) represent end-game foraging. Their mushrooms require knives with high power, precision, and steadiness to harvest cleanly.
Review knife requirements and basket capacities on /gear before tackling late-game regions, and track level milestones on /leveling.
