Mushrooming Upgrade Order

Checked

Spend in this order: backpack, then knife, then lantern — the sack pays for itself the first time you fill it instead of walking home half empty.

The spending order, with prices

Follow this sequence to keep earnings growing steadily:

First, buy the Canvas Sack ($250, Level 2) from the Packsmith. Upgrading from 12 to 25 slots doubles how many mushrooms you bring back per run.

Second, buy the Pocket Knife ($300, Level 3) from the Toolsmith. Your starter knife only cuts Common and Uncommon caps. The Pocket Knife cuts Rare species and raises cutting precision.

Third, purchase the Tin Lantern ($200, Level 2) from the Lamplighter. It gives 18 light and 22 sensing range, meeting entry requirements for The Undergrove.

Fourth, pay the $1,500 Toll Bridge fee. This unlocks Amber Glade, Mossy Hollow, and Pinewood Ridge. Your Pocket Knife can already harvest caps growing there.

Fifth, get the Leather Satchel ($1,500, Level 5) to reach 40 slots, preparing you for larger circuits across the bridge.

Sixth, save for the Bone Knife ($6,000, Level 10). It unlocks Epic mushrooms like Azure Glowcap ($320) and Beamfoot ($1,300), while boosting power to 2.0.

Seventh, upgrade your bag to the Hearth Pack ($2,500, Level 7, 50 slots) or Explorer's Pack ($6,000, Level 9, 60 slots) to keep pace with higher-tier harvest areas.

What each upgrade pays back

Every tool purchase pays itself back by adding inventory slots or unlocking higher mushroom rarities.

Purchase Level Price What it changes Trips to pay back
Canvas Sack Level 2 $250 Expands slots from 12 to 25 1–2 trips (rough estimate)
Pocket Knife Level 3 $300 Cuts Rare species ($60–$520) 1–2 trips (rough estimate)
Tin Lantern Level 2 $200 Senses at 22 range; unlocks Undergrove 1–2 trips (rough estimate)
Toll Bridge Level 1 $1,500 Unlocks 3 new foraging areas 2–3 trips (rough estimate)
Leather Satchel Level 5 $1,500 Expands slots from 25 to 40 2–3 trips (rough estimate)
Hearth Pack Level 7 $2,500 Expands slots from 40 to 50 2–4 trips (rough estimate)
Explorer's Pack Level 9 $6,000 Expands slots from 50 to 60 3–5 trips (rough estimate)
Bone Knife Level 10 $6,000 Cuts Epic species ($220–$1,950) 2–4 trips (rough estimate)

Backpacks offer the most reliable return. An extra 13 slots in the Canvas Sack lets you collect 13 additional mushrooms per walk. Even with cheap Common mushrooms selling for $10 to $30 washed, 13 extra caps produce several hundred coins on a single run, clearing the $250 purchase price immediately.

Knife payback depends on finding higher rarity spawns. A Pocket Knife pays for itself after harvesting two or three clean Rare caps like Black Trumpet ($90) or Cauldron Cap ($105).

Where not to spend coins yet

Avoid spending gold on gear that lacks immediate utility:

High-tier knives before meeting level requirements. Knives like the Mycologist's Scalpel ($39,000, Level 22) require high player levels. Hoarding gold for expensive blades while using small bags slows progression.

Intermediate knife sidegrades. Knives like Copper Parer ($2,500, Level 8) only cut Rare, which your $300 Pocket Knife already handles. Skip sidegrades and jump straight to Bone Knife ($6,000) at level 10 to unlock Epic caps.

Expensive lanterns early. Tin Lantern ($200) satisfies Undergrove entry. Spending $1,200 on Brass Lantern early takes money away from Leather Satchel ($1,500).

Event or decorative items. Items bought with limited currencies or Robux provide no advantage in your core foraging loop.

When the order changes

The standard progression order shifts under specific circumstances:

Preparing for Gloamwood at level 45. Gloamwood is deeply shaded. Start saving around level 40 for vision gear like Stillwater Lantern ($300,000, Level 48) to spot dark caps upon entering.

Overcoming level bottlenecks. If your level falls behind the requirement for the next backpack, prioritize knife upgrades. Cutting higher rarity mushrooms awards more experience, speeding up level progression toward the next pack tier.

Night foraging runs. If you farm during night cycles for Luminous or Shadow mutations, increasing your lantern sensing range takes higher priority to locate caps before dawn.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Knife or backpack first?

Backpack. A knife opens rarer mushrooms, but a small basket means you lose the trip to town anyway. The Canvas Sack at level 2 costs $250.

Is the Toll Bridge worth $1,500?

Yes once you sell a full basket per trip. It opens three areas with mushrooms your Birch Meadow knife can already cut.
