What the cutting bar asks you to do
Harvesting in Mushrooming requires timed interaction. Approaching any mushroom prompts a timing bar with a moving marker and a highlighted target zone. Your cut grade depends on where the marker sits each time you click.
The cutting action follows four concrete steps:
- Approach the mushroom until the harvest prompt appears, then begin the cut.
- Watch the marker sweep across the gauge to time its speed.
- Click as the marker enters the bright gold center band.
- Complete the required clicks to finish harvesting and receive your grade.
Common and Uncommon mushrooms ask for 1 click. Rare and Epic species increase the requirement to 2 clicks. Legendary, Mythic, Secret, and Celestial species demand 3 to 4 clicks, while Ancestral species require 5 clicks. Higher rarities sweep the marker faster, tightening your reaction window.
Missing the center lowers your grade rather than breaking the mushroom. Each mushroom calculates its cut grade individually. If fast markers on rare finds give you trouble, upgrading your blade through /gear softens the difficulty.
The five cut grades and what each one pays
Pristine pays x1.3 while Mangled pays x0.35, creating a 3.7x payout spread. On high-tier finds, this spread decides whether a haul funds your next tool upgrade or leaves you short.
| Cut grade | Multiplier | What the game counts as | What it looks like on your sale |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pristine | x1.3 | Every cut right in the gold, not a scratch | 30% bonus over base price |
| Clean | x1.0 | A good cut, a little nick at most | Base price without penalty or bonus |
| Scuffed | x0.8 | A few rough cuts | 20% penalty off base price |
| Bruised | x0.6 | Many rough cuts | 40% penalty off base price |
| Mangled | x0.35 | Hacked off | 65% penalty off base price |
Pristine demands landing every required click in the gold zone. Landing three gold hits and one outer hit on an Epic mushroom drops the rating immediately. The game does not average accuracy. If every click lands in gold, you get the full x1.3 bonus. Test how cut modifiers combine with other conditions on /tools/payout-calculator.
How the gold zone gets easier: power, precision, steadiness
Better knives keep the standard x1.3 Pristine multiplier rather than raising the ceiling. Upgrading improves mechanical assistance across three attributes:
- Power cuts through mushrooms in fewer clicks. When knife power exceeds mushroom tier, harvesting feels almost free.
- Precision widens the gold target zone on the cutting bar.
- Steadiness slows the marker speed, granting more reaction time on difficult species.
The table below shows how knife stats scale from starter tools into high-tier blades:
| Knife | Level | Price | Cuts up to | Power | Precision | Steadiness |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rusty Knife | Level 1 | Free | Uncommon | 1.00 | 1.00 | 1.00 |
| Pocket Knife | Level 3 | $300 | Rare | 1.30 | 1.15 | 1.05 |
| Bone Knife | Level 10 | $6,000 | Epic | 2.00 | 1.45 | 1.15 |
| Hearthsteel Knife | Level 12 | $9,000 | Epic | 2.20 | 1.52 | 1.20 |
| Mycologist's Scalpel | Level 22 | $39,000 | Legendary | 2.90 | 1.80 | 1.35 |
| Moonsilver Blade | Level 30 | $120,000 | Mythic | 3.40 | 2.00 | 1.45 |
Higher precision widens the target band, while steadiness slows fast sweeps. Upgraded knives also unlock rarer mushrooms, as shown in /gear. Check knife requirements for all species in /mushrooms.
Cut grades multiply on top of age, dirt and mutations
Your final sale price is the product of four multipliers: base price multiplied by age, cut grade, dirt state, and mutation. Because these factors multiply together, a poor cut drags down every other positive condition on the mushroom.
Age offers four stages: Fresh (x1.25), Young (x0.90), Old (x0.65), and Rotten (x0.30). Dirt introduces three field conditions: clean (x1.00), dusty (x0.85), and muddy (x0.60). Washing dirty mushrooms at a water basin converts them to washed (x1.05), turning a penalty into a 5% bonus.
Consider three outcomes for a standard $4 Button Mushroom:
| Mushroom condition | Age factor | Cut factor | Dirt factor | Mutation factor | Payout |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rotten, Mangled, dusty | Rotten (x0.30) | Mangled (x0.35) | dusty (x0.85) | None (x1.0) | $0.36 |
| Fresh, Clean, washed | Fresh (x1.25) | Clean (x1.00) | washed (x1.05) | None (x1.0) | $5.25 |
| Fresh, Pristine, washed, Prismatic | Fresh (x1.25) | Pristine (x1.30) | washed (x1.05) | Prismatic (x8.0) | $54.60 |
The jump from $0.36 to $54.60 shows why cut accuracy and washing matter. If you find a rare species carrying an 8x multiplier from /mutations and butcher the cut into Mangled, you lose most of its value. Wash dirty finds in town, time your clicks carefully, and model specific payouts on /tools/payout-calculator.
