Mushrooming Mutations and Multipliers

Checked

A mutation multiplies a mushroom's price, from Dewy at x1.4 up to Prismatic and Spectral at x8, and a mushroom can only ever carry one of them.

Every mutation and its multiplier

Mutations are rare variants that multiply harvest value. A mushroom can only hold one mutation at a time; two mutations never stack on the same cap. Harvesting any mutated mushroom grants 50% bonus XP. Mutated mushrooms also spawn clean, so you never need to wash off dust or mud before selling.

The table below lists all 19 mutations sorted from highest multiplier to lowest:

Mutation Multiplier How it happens
Prismatic x8.0 Any mushroom, any time
Spectral x8.0 Only in Gloamwood, at night
Murmuring x5.0 Only in The Rootways: the mushroom is still saying its word
Crystal x4.0 Any mushroom, any time
Thunderstruck x4.0 Only when lightning strikes a mushroom in a thunderstorm. The charge lasts a few minutes.
Moonstruck x4.0 Under the Ember Moon (Lantern Wake). It fades when the moon sets.
Shadow x3.5 At night
Golden x3.0 Any mushroom, any time
Haunted x3.0 At night, during the Lantern Wake
Frosted x2.5 Any mushroom, any time
Albino x2.2 Any mushroom, any time
Candied x2.0 During the Lantern Wake
Luminous x1.8 At night
Shaded x1.6 In the shade: under trees and bushes, on trunks, logs and stumps (not in the rain). The rain washes it away.
Mossy x1.5 Only in Mossy Hollow
Sunkissed x1.5 In the open around midday, when the sky is clear. Clouds, rain or fog take it away.
Misty x1.5 In the fog. It fades when the fog lifts.
Dewy x1.4 At dawn, when it is not raining. The dew burns off in the middle of the morning.
Soaked x1.3 While it rains, out in the open. It dries once the rain stops.

Because a mushroom never carries two mutations, x8.0 is the hard multiplier ceiling. Spotting an 8x Prismatic or Spectral specimen turns a standard run into an immediate high-value payday.

Weather mutations disappear when the weather changes

Whisperwood operates on an active environmental cycle. A full game day lasts 16 minutes: 11 minutes of daylight and 5 minutes of darkness. Weather shifts regularly across the surface:

  • Rain rolls in every 10 to 20 minutes and lasts for a few minutes. Rain mushrooms sprout across fields, and open-air mushrooms can take on Soaked (x1.3). When rain stops, Soaked mushrooms dry up and lose the multiplier.
  • Thunderstorms occasionally develop from showers. Lightning can strike a mushroom near a player, producing Thunderstruck (x4.0). The charge lasts only a few minutes.
  • Fog rolls in at dawn or dusk briefly. It produces fog mushrooms in Gloamwood and allows surface mushrooms to gain Misty (x1.5). Once fog lifts, the mutation fades.
  • Dawn dew coats mushrooms at sunrise on clear mornings, producing Dewy (x1.4). Daylight burns this moisture off by midday.

Weather mutations stick to mushrooms rooted in the soil. If weather clears while a mushroom remains unpicked, the modifier vanishes. The moment you harvest the mushroom into your backpack, the mutation locks in permanently. When storms hit, prioritize mutated specimens immediately. Review surface zone layouts on /map to plan quick foraging circuits during bad weather.

Time, place and event mutations

Beyond shifting weather, many mutations depend on fixed hours, specific regions, or events:

Nightfall activates two modifiers across all surface areas. Luminous (x1.8) and Shadow (x3.5) appear only during the 5 minutes of night. During clear daytime, direct sunlight around noon creates Sunkissed (x1.5) in the open, while mushrooms under tree canopies and logs receive Shaded (x1.6). Rain washes Shaded away, and cloud cover removes Sunkissed.

Three mutations are locked to individual map areas:

  • Mossy (x1.5) grows exclusively in Mossy Hollow.
  • Spectral (x8.0) appears only in Gloamwood after dark.
  • Murmuring (x5.0) exists solely within The Rootways.

Underground regions follow unique rules. The Undergrove and The Rootways are enclosed caverns where surface weather never enters. You will never encounter rain, thunderstorms, fog, or weather mutations while foraging underground.

Seasonal events introduce temporary modifiers. During the Lantern Wake, mushrooms can gain Candied (x2.0) all day, Haunted (x3.0) at night, and Moonstruck (x4.0) whenever the Ember Moon rises. To structure routes around these windows, consult /guides/money-guide.

What a mutation is worth next to your cut

A mutation is the highest single multiplier in Mushrooming, but payout math multiplies it directly against age, cut grade, and cleanliness. Because of this, poor cutting technique damages high-tier mutations severely.

Consider a Rare mushroom with a $100 base price rolling an 8x Prismatic mutation in Fresh condition:

  • Fresh (x1.25) + Pristine (x1.30) + clean (x1.00) + Prismatic (x8.0) yields $1,300.00.
  • Fresh (x1.25) + Clean (x1.00) + clean (x1.00) + Prismatic (x8.0) yields $1,000.00.
  • Fresh (x1.25) + Scuffed (x0.80) + clean (x1.00) + Prismatic (x8.0) yields $800.00.
  • Fresh (x1.25) + Mangled (x0.35) + clean (x1.00) + Prismatic (x8.0) yields $350.00.

Botching the cut from Pristine down to Mangled on an 8x mushroom throws away $950 on a single stem. The mutation multiplies the cut grade rather than replacing it. Learning the cutting gauge in /perfect-cut ensures you collect the full value of every rare spawn. You can calculate payouts for any combination of species, age, and mutation on /tools/payout-calculator.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How many mutations can one mushroom have?

One. A mushroom never stacks two mutations, so the highest multiplier you can get is 8x from Prismatic or Spectral.

Do mutations survive after you pick the mushroom?

Yes. A mutation stays once the mushroom is in your backpack, but weather mutations on mushrooms still in the ground wear off when the weather changes.
